Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 In 1594, William Barents prepared to sail off the edge of the known world. He would leave in the spring for distant Nova Zembla, whose shores stretched hundreds of miles above the Russian mainland. He intended to follow its coastline north as far as he could go. #2 While Barents had gotten an education, he was still very much a merchant sailor who was hired to explore commercial areas. He was far from famous, and his country’s future wasn’t yet written. #3 The Dutch rebellion was the first modern revolution against a monarch. It was also the first to reject monarchy itself. The Dutch gained independence, and their land was split in half due to the conflict. #4 In 1594, William Barents set out to prove that a northern passage existed, between the Arctic and far Eastern empires. He set out in a time of cataclysmic change, with upheaval reshaping every corner of Dutch life.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 On Friday, 29 June 1860, Samuel and Mary Kent were asleep in their house in Road, five miles from Trowbridge. They were bedridden with a baby on the first floor. Their eldest daughter, five-year-old Mary Amelia, shared their room. #2 On Friday, the Kents' nursemaid, Emily Doel, put the children to bed. Half an hour later, Gough carried Eveline up to the nursery and put her in the cot next to her own. The five-year-old Mary Amelia was put to bed in the room she shared with her parents. #3 The family was asleep in the nursery when the comet passed through the sky. At 10 p. m. , Mr Kent opened the yard door and unchained his black Newfoundland guard dog. #4 On the night of the murders, the dog in the house barked, but nobody heard anything out of the ordinary. The sun rose two or three minutes before 4 a. m. The door was safe as usual, and the window was a little bit open.

This is an outline of modern Buddhist thought, adding 21st Century knowledge to what we have gleaned from scriptural writings and science since the time of Buddha. Buddhism is one of the world's largest religions, yet the different groups range from idol worshipers to atheists. Siddhartha Gautama the Buddha lived in a society where people were mostly atheists or traditional polytheists accustomed to stories of many gods. There is little mention of One Supreme Being in Buddha's teachings because no one at that time would have listened. Your beliefs do not make you a free thinker; what makes you a free thinker is the ability to change your beliefs based on new information. Topics like the Underworld and Enlightenment are spiritual matters of great importance to mankind, so it is time to redefine the Religion of Buddhism considering new information that has come to light in the 21st Century. There are four Ages in ancient writings: this is the Final Age, so all people should be prepared for the Afterlife with knowledge of exactly how life works and what is required to succeed in reaching the reward of eternity.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 In 2006, two of the Windy City’s most notorious wiseguys, Joseph Joey the Clown Lombardo and Frank Frankie the German Schweihs, were arrested by federal authorities. They were both highly respected members of one of the most powerful and dangerous crime syndicates in the world. #2 The Family Secrets investigation was a major accomplishment for the FBI, as was the arrest of the Spilotro brothers. However, things were looking up for the Midwest crime family in 2004, when Jimmy Marcello, the syndicate’s new street boss, emerged from a ten-year federal prison sentence. #3 On April 6, 2005, Patrick Fitzgerald announced the indictment of the fourteen men, including Joey Lombardo and Frank Schweihs. Lombardo was placed on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List. However, despite the written correspondence between him and Zagel, letters sent through his attorney and conspicuously postmarked from within Chicago, the trail went cold. #4 After ten months of tracking down and arresting Joey Lombardo, the FBI finally caught up with its target in mid-January 2006. Lombardo was booked, fingerprinted, and jailed on January 13, 2006.

This work deconstructs Frantz Fanon's published works on the Algerian Revolution towards interrogating Fanon's discourse of anti-colonial Revolution in a search for insights into the failure of the Algerian Revolution. What is discovered is Fanon's discourse of Revolution in a state of evolution is trapped in time arising from Fanon's death in 1961. This evolving, unfinished discourse of Fanon was of limited utility in understanding what transpired in Algeria with freedom. But in its penetrating analysis of French colonial domination of Algeria offers insights into the worldview, intent and strategy of the revolutionary elite who grew itself into an oligarchy thereby jacking the Revolution by defanging the masses. Central to this analysis was the power relation between traditional Isam and the Revolutionary elite.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The image of a young man hanging upside down by his left leg from a wooden frame was derived from Christian tradition, which described St. Peter as being crucified upside down so he could not be said to be copying his Lord. #2 The Tarot cards seem to be a representation of the Kabbalah, a Jewish mystical tradition, despite the lack of evidence connecting Bembo to any occult groups. The cards seem to demand an esoteric interpretation, despite the lack of evidence. #3 The Tarot is a path of personal growth through understanding of ourselves and life. It is a way to draw us into its mysterious world, which ultimately can never be explained. #4 The Tarot of Arthur Edward Waite, whose Rider pack appeared in 1910, is the most popular version of the cards today. It has been criticized for changing some of the trump cards from their accepted version, but it has a wide range of pictures that reflect the cards’ meanings.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The sense of being myself is our most ordinary, intimate, and familiar experience. It is the background of all experience, and it never leaves us. It is the ever-present factor in all changing experience. #2 Our sense of self is made up of two elements: our ever-present, unchanging being and the qualities it derives from our constantly changing experience, which seem to condition and limit it. Our being is naturally peaceful, and it is in this state of peace and happiness that we should aim. #3 When we allow our essential self to become mixed or identified with the qualities of experience, its natural condition of peace and happiness is veiled or obscured. We seem to become the feeling, and we lose our self in experience. However, we still have the experience of being myself even in the darkest feelings. #4 The separate self or ego is constantly in a state of lack, as it is constantly trying to defend itself from feeling vulnerable and incomplete. It is constantly seeking objects, substances, activities, states of mind, or relationships that will make it feel whole.

They were navigating among the islands of w?banakik, a beautiful but dangerous edge of the world. #2 The Wap?nahki were not a unified people. The languages spoken by those living far away were similar but subtly different from those of Kt??hαn?to and his relatives. They knew that they inhabited the most beautiful part of the world, and they felt slightly superior to all other people. #3 The people were able to hunt and gather w?banakik, which provided them with food in the spring. The summers were also good, with little frosts that lasted only a short time. #4 The canoes carrying Kt??hαn?to and his companions rounded the last of the small islands, facing the swells again. The strange vessel was clearly visible, sitting quietly in a natural harbor among several islands, its trees bare of skins, the figures of men silhouetted against the sky.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I had been awake since dawn and had breakfasted lightly, for I was too excited to feel hungry. I had left London that morning, on my way to Spain and the Civil War. I had no idea how to carry out my decision. I knew no Spanish, and I had never been to Spain. #2 I was going to Spain to fight in the war. My father, a retired Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, disapproved of many aspects of my life at Cambridge and in London. He gave me a great deal of sound advice and took me on a tour of the Army and Navy Stores to see me get the right equipment for the war. #3 I was excited to be going to Spain to fight for the Insurgents. I had finished my time at Cambridge and taken my degree, but I hadn’t yet committed myself to a career. This war was a great opportunity for me to go out on my own and learn about modern warfare. #4 I was excited and nervous about going to war, but I had to admit that the experience was useful. I had nothing to lose. I was deeply moved by the way my parents were taking everything, and by the cheery hospitality of my friends.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 We must ask ourselves why we are being educated. Is it only to pass some examinations and get a job. Or is it the function of education to prepare us for the whole process of life. We must understand that life is not just a job, an occupation. #2 Education is meant to help you understand the vast expanse of life with all its subtleties, its beauty, and its sorrows and joys. But education can only do this if it is free of fear. Otherwise, it will never help you discover what is real and what is true. #3 The world is caught up in endless wars, and it is guided by politicians who are always seeking power. The function of education is to give you freedom, not just to conform to the social order. #4 The world is in chaos, and it is up to each individual to respond to that by finding a solution. If you respond as a Hindu or a Buddhist, a Christian or a communist, your response is very limited.
The Mayan people were natural storytellers, and their imagination knew no bounds.
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Donata Genovese died in 1931 after suffering from a virulent form of tuberculosis. She had one child with her husband, and neighbors said she had been doing philanthropic work for the families of the unemployed Italians in the city. #2 Donata Genovese was a philanthropist who died from tuberculosis in 1931. Her death certificate stated that she died from acute miliary tuberculosis, which can be contracted from poor conditions and unsanitary nutrition. #3 Vito Genovese arrived in New York Harbor on May 23, 1913. The Italian migration had already spawned a disparate criminal culture that included the Black Hand, a loose amalgam of extortionists who preyed on the fears and gullible nature of their mainly Southern Italian compatriots. #4 Vito Genovese’s involvement in bootlegging brought him to the attention of the cops, who started the file on him at police headquarters. He was charged in a homicide case in November 1925, but cops dropped the charges.
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The Bible is a collection of books and letters that are all about astonishment. It is a revelation that invites us into a new experience, and human beings do not like to change. #2 God was not a likeable or lovable character for most of human history. God was felt to be controllable through human sacrifice, which was practiced by all cultures. But with the advent of Jesus, God took the initiative to overcome our fear and need to manipulate God. #3 The Bible is a text in travail, which means it does not give you the conclusions but rather creates a clear set of patterns and a tangent. It is only inner experience that can bring you closer to the truth. #4 The Bible is a collection of books, and we must believe that the Spirit was guiding this listening and writing. We must trust that there is a development of crucial divine wisdom inside this anthology of books.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The death of Pope Benedict XV in 1922 was the result of a persistent cough that had begun to bother him two weeks earlier. He took last rites, and died the next morning. Giacomo Della Chiesa, a cardinal who had only been elected three months earlier, was chosen to replace him. #2 The death of Pius X in 1922 brought about even more unrest in Italy. The country was split between the Socialists, who wanted to ride the tide of popular anger to power, and the fascists, who wanted to destroy the Church and priests. #3 The pope excommunicated the king and forbade Catholics from voting in national elections or running for parliament, as he hoped to gain international support to return Rome to papal rule. But as the nineteenth century wore on, this prospect seemed ever more remote. #4 The conclave began on February 2, and 12 cardinals received votes. On the second day, Merry del Val reached what would be his high of 17 votes. Gasparri received 24 votes by the sixth ballot but remained stuck at that number for the seventh and eighth as well.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 There are two ways to experience the police in America: as the people you call when there is a problem, or as the people who are called on you. For many, the police are the ones who are called on them. #2 I was a college student at the time, and I was carrying weed to a Republican convention. I was almost caught, but fortunately nothing bad came out of it. With the advantage of hindsight, I can look back and know that if I had been arrested, it would’ve been no more than an embarrassing hassle. #3 I have never been to jail or prison, but I have spent a lot of time on the ground reporting on criminal justice and the growing social movement to reform it. #4 The United States has the most incarcerated citizens in the world, and it has done so for more than four decades. The country’s homicide rate has declined sharply from its peak, but it remains higher than that of any other developed democracy.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 America’s Jazz Age began in July 1918 in Montgomery, Alabama, when a strikingly beautiful woman named Zelda Sayre caught the eye of First Lieutenant Francis Scott Fitzgerald. She was 17 years old, and she had a well-earned reputation for violating the time-honored codes of sexual propriety. #2 Zelda was a popular girl at Sidney Lanier High School, and she was well ahead of the learning curve in most other matters. She habitually rouged her cheeks and stenciled her eyes with mascara, giving her friends’ parents great cause for concern. #3 Fitzgerald was a lazy man who spent most of his time reading and writing. He had little ambition, and he spent most of his time escaping the indignity of a fifth year at Princeton by enlisting in the army in late 1917. #4 Zelda was one of Montgomery’s most popular debutantes. She enjoyed scores of romantic opportunities from the usual college and business crowds. With America fully mobilized for war, she was one of the most hotly pursued belles in the state.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The name California was derived from a Spanish novel that was published in 1510. The novel chronicled the adventures of Esplandi?n, a son of the hero Amadis of Gaul, at the siege of Constantinople. Esplandi?n’s allies at the siege were the Californians, a race of black Amazons under the command of Queen Calafia. #2 The American state of California is located between latitude 42 degrees north and latitude 32 degrees north. On a clear day, California appears as a serene palette of blue, green, brown, white, and red. However, this apparent serenity masks a titanic drama occurring beneath the surface. #3 The landscape of California is a mosaic of stark contrasts, vibrant and volatile with the geological forces that shaped the western edge of the continent. Coastal California, where settlement began and maintains its greatest density, sustains a variety of salubrious climates. #4 California is a distinct bioregion due to its water and climate. It is a island on the land, sealed off by the Pacific, the Sierra Nevada, the Klamath and Cascade ranges in the north, and the Mojave Desert in the southeast.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 On March 6, Trump publicly stated that he would leave the decision about the Grand Princess to others, but added that he didn’t need the infection numbers to double because of one ship. Newsom had no political capital to waste on outrage. #2 Trump was not a president suited to bringing the country together in a crisis. He had no plan for crushing the coronavirus, and even in the midst of the pandemic, he did not have a general theory of how to handle a public health crisis. #3 The coronavirus pandemic shattered Trump’s claims of a easy reelection in 2020. Unemployment rates shot up to nearly 15 percent by April. The president needed to come up with a new plan, a plan to win a difficult campaign. #4 Trump’s court of sycophants was a source of constant disgust for more level-headed Republicans. The president summoned the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, to the White House in 2019 and instructed his aides to walk him through the presidential polling.
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 When Nixon took office, America had been fighting for the past several years to defend South Vietnam from being taken over by the Communist regime of North Vietnam, which itself was supported by China and the Soviet Union. America’s goal was to make sure South Vietnam and its neighbors in Southeast Asia did not fall into the Communist camp. #2 In his first two years in office, Nixon faced many challenges. He began working on arms control agreements with the Soviet Union and the opening of relations between the United States and China. But he would not produce any real breakthroughs until 1971. #3 The New Isolationism was a negative congressional and public reaction to the tragic and unwinnable Vietnam War. It stemmed from the desire to bring back all troops stationed in Western Europe, as well as reduce American defenses abroad. #4 Nixon knew that to keep isolationism and protectionism at bay and respond effectively to intensifying globalization, he needed to change America’s foreign policy.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The first and most common mistake with the Old Testament law is to ignore where it appears. Israel arrives at Sinai in chapter 19 of Exodus, but their elaborate deliverance from Egypt takes place in chapters 3?14. If the law were a prerequisite for salvation, then we would expect to see Moses in Egypt making a public service announcement: Hey, everyone, good news! God plans to set you free from slavery to Pharaoh. #2 The climax of a chiasm is not always found in the middle, but the turning point of the narrative is. The flood narrative in Genesis 6?9 is an example of mirror imaging on a smaller scale. The symmetrical ebb and flow of the story matches the rise and fall of the water. #3 The Israelites journeyed to Sinai several times, and the descriptions of the journey are similar each time. God provided them with manna and quail, and they requested water from the rock. After Sinai, the Israelites fought the Amalekites. #4 The first part of the journey for the Hebrews was to leave Egypt and find a new home. They were a mixed multitude, refugees and former slaves, seeking a better life. Sample Book Insights: #1 On July 10, 1981, Cheryl Brown, who lived on a farm a few miles west of Skidmore, watched as the town was pushed too far. Cheryl had been working at the B B Grocery for about 15 months when violence erupted again. If McElroy intended to carry out his threats, he would either hit her father at home or come in the back of the store like he did last summer. #2 When McElroy was in town, his wife, Trena, would usually stay out in the truck with him. Cheryl would always spot the other McElroy trucks and their owners, and would speak their names as if they were on an honor roll. #3 As the shooting continued, Cheryl rushed to the telephone in the front of the store to call her baby sitter, who lived in town. More shots were fired as she explained to the baby sitter that it wasn't safe to bring the children to the store. #4 On the day of his death, Ken had been involved with Alice for more than 20 years.
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Augustus was an icon and a mystery. He ended a century of revolution and brought down the Roman Republic, and replaced it with the empire of which he was the first emperor. He found the perfect number two: a partner to serve as his general and administrator without threatening his power. #2 Octavian was born in 63 BC. His father, Gaius Octavius, came from a family of strivers from a small town south of Rome.
