His music was best-known for his use of the guitar riff based on the 3/2 clave, sometimes known as "shave and a haircut, two bits", and it was a motif taken up by many artists after he popularised it with his early hits. Although he did not have a huge number of hits, his songs, such as "I'm A Man", "Pretty Thing", "Who Do You Love" and "Mona" have inspired and been recorded by a huge number of artists. This great value 86-track 3-CD collection comprises the A & B sides of all his singles for the Checker label from his 1955 debut through to 1962, plus the tracks which were not included on his singles from his first seven albums - "Bo Diddley", "Go Bo Diddley", "Have Guitar Will Travel", "In The Spotlight", "Bo Diddley Is A Gunslinger", "Bo Diddley Is A Lover" and "Bo Diddley Is A Twister". It's thorough overview of his crucial first few years of recording, which established his unique position as one of the pioneers of the genre.Bo Diddley, also known as Ellas McDaniel, was one of the most distinctive and influential artists in the transition of popular music from blues and R&B through to rock 'n' roll during the 1950s. This great value 113-track 4-CD anthology includes, with the exception of certain records which are unavailable for inclusion due to copyright restrictions, just about every record which peaked in the Billboard R&B Top 15 during that year. By this time, the R&B scene had evolved considerably as the rock 'n roll scene had matured and Tin Pan Alley had marketed it's teen-oriented offshoots, and there was an exciting feel to the charts, with substantial crossover into the pop charts through artists like Ben E. King, Ray Charles, Brook Benton, The Miracles, Aretha Franklin and The Marvelettes. There was also a significant weight of other records from the increasingly powerful Motown, Tamla and other labels producing material which would have a significant influence on emerging talent across the pond in the UK, like The Beatles, who absorbed some of the songs in this anthology into their repertoire, sowing the seeds of the British invasion which was soon to transform the pop landscape once more. With the blurring of the boundaries between the genres, the more traditional blues and R&B artists whose music had helped lay the groundwork for rock found it harder to reach the top positions in the R&B chart, and the foundations of the soul boom of the late '60s and 70s was clearly in evidence in many of the hits included here. As with all these collections, it provides a window onto a dynamic and exciting musical environment, and includes a number of unfamiliar names and recordings of which even enthusiasts of the genre may notThis continues the strand of R&B and country collections associated with Acrobat's highly popular "America's Greatest Hits" series, this one focusing on the top R&B records in the US Billboard charts during 1961. This great value 71-track 3-CD collection comprises every A and B side she released from her recording debut in 1949 through to her last Top 50 entry in 1962. It includes her first recordings with Eddie "Sugarman" Penigar's Orchestra, her early '50s releases as Little Miss Sharecropper, and then with Maurice King & His Wolverines as Bea Baker, and with Todd Rhodes Orchestra billed for the first time as LaVern Baker, before joining Atlantic in 1953, and then includes all her releases for Ahmet and Nesuhi Ertegun through the next decade. It naturally includes her big hits with "Tweedle-Dee" "Bop-Ting-A-Ling", "Play It Fair", "Jim Dandy", "Jim Dandy Got Married", "I Cried A Tear" and many others - a total of 26 chart records during that period. She was a fine R&B stylist, with a broad enough appeal for many of her records to cross over to the pop charts and make an impact in the burgeoning arena of rock 'n' roll, appearing in Alan Freed's "Rock, Rock, Rock" and "Mr. Rock & Roll" movies. This collection is an entertaining and thorough overview of her core career.LaVern Baker was a one of the top female R&B singers of the '50s and early '60s, racking up a string of R&B and pop hits during her time with the Atlantic label - indeed she was every bit as much a pop and rock 'n' roll artists as a pure R&B singer. She made her recording debut in 1958, and the next few years were among the most prolific of her career, encompassing both studio and 'live' recordings as she recorded first for the Bethlehem label and then for Colpix, marking her down as a pianist and singer who was a versatile and unique interpreter of songs from across the jazz, blues and pop spectrum. This great-value 78-track 4-CD set comprises just about every recording which she released during the formative years of her career and which established her reputation, featuring the tracks from the albums "Little Girl Blue", "Nina Simone & her Friends", "The Amazing Nina Simone", "Nina Simone at Town Hall", "Nina Simone at Newport", "Forbidden Fruit", "Nina at the Village Gate" and "Nina Simone Sings Ellington". It also includes tracks released on singles which were not otherwise included on albums, naturally featuring the chart hits "I Loves You Porgy", "Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out" and "Trouble In Mind". His chart career was telescoped into a few short years, his hits drying up in 1960, and his career declining until his untimely demise in 1968 at the age of 25 from a drug overdose. This 61-track 2-CD set comprises the A & B sides of his singles with The Teenagers and as a solo artist on the Gee and Roulette labels during what was the primary era of his career, along with selected titles from the album "At the London Palladium" and the titles not otherwise released as singles from the album "Rock 'n' Roll" for Roulette. He first achieved success as a songwriter, co-writing the big 1946 Louis Jordan hit "That Chick's Too Young To Fry", but he eventually got his first recording contract in 1949. This great value focuses on his singles releases for MGM during the period when he achieved all his chart successes, naturally featuring all his nineteen pop and R&B hits, and selecting A and B sides from across his output during that time to provide what we hope is an entertaining and representative cross-section of his work and a worthy showcase for his extraordinary voice and his unique way with a song. Tommy died tragically young in 1969, so this collection certainly comprises his main career highlights. We have, by way of fascinating comparison, included both versions of "It's All In The Game" with which he made the charts in 1951 and 1958, and done the same with his two versions of "Please Mr. Sun", hits in 1952 and 1959, and "Morning Side Of The Mountain", a hit in 1951 and 1959.Tommy Edwards was a sophisticated R&B vocalist, best-known for his landmark US and UK No. 1 "It's All In The Game", but who also had many other pop and R&B hits, and released many singles which showcased the sophisticated ballad style which characterised

Led by guitarist Johnny Moore, and featuring various vocalists, the most successful and illustrious being Charles Brown, they enjoyed a succession of R&B hits in the decade which spanned the latter years of the '40s and the first half of the 1950s. They were unusual in that Moore refused to sign an exclusive recording contract, so they recorded for a variety of labels, with their output for different imprints sometimes being released in parallel. It features all their sixteen career hits, including their No. 1 with Floyd Dixon "Telephone Blues" and their Top 5 classics "Driftin Blues", "So Long", "Sunny Road", Changeable Woman", "Merry Christmas Baby", "New Orleans Blues", and "More Than You Know" as well as ten other Top 10 hits. As well as their many recordings with Charles Brown before he embarked on a successful solo career, featured vocalists include Ivory Joe Hunter, Floyd Dixon, Billy Valentine, Lee Barnes, Mari Jones and Frankie Ervin.
