Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The role of chance in our lives is not limited to extreme circumstances. The outline of our lives is constantly being influenced by a variety of random events, along with our responses to them, which determines our fate. #2 The human response to uncertainty is complex, and it is often the case that different parts of the brain come to different conclusions and apparently fight to determine which one will dominate. #3 The world is filled with randomness, and it is a rare skill to be able to make wise assessments and choices in the face of uncertainty. We will examine the role of chance in the world around us, the ideas that have been developed over the centuries to help us understand that role, and the factors that often lead us astray. #4 The most difficult aspect of understanding the role of randomness in life is that many of the consequences that follow from those principles are counterintuitive. The reason is that in any series of random events, an extraordinary event is most likely to be followed by a more ordinary one.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The scene in which Han Solo lands the Millennium Falcon on what he takes to be an asteroid is impossible. The humans of the future will surely understand that only for a brief period of time, less than three centuries, did a significant number of their kind believe that planets and asteroids are inert. #2 To recognize is not the same as an initial introduction. It does not require an exchange of words, and recognition occurs when a prior awareness flashes before us, changing our understanding of what we see. #3 The landscape of the Bengal Delta is so dynamic that it leads to countless instances of recognition. I was able to capture some of these in my notes from 2002, when I wrote that the land was alive and did not exist solely as a stage for the enactment of human history. #4 The challenges that climate change poses for the contemporary writer, however, are also products of something broader and older. They derive from the grid of literary forms and conventions that developed in the narrative imagination during the period when the accumulation of carbon in the atmosphere was rewriting the destiny of the earth.

Satellite debris in earth orbit is becoming a significant problem, that will only increase, unless we find methods to remove or otherwise dispose of dead satellites. There is a temporary graveyard for some satellites, that is located at geosyncronous orbit plus 300 km, and while this may acknowledge the problem, a longer-term solution is needed. To remove bulk material from orbit is not a simple problem, because the debris field can be quite large. Any type of netting or capture system will have a limited life, and consume too much fuel to accomplish multiple missions. The cost alone, makes this impractical. This short ebook presents a low-cost method for sending dead satellites into a solar trajectory, for permanent disposal. Proposed here is a simple system that can be used many times. It is based on a groundcontrolled system that renders the satellite massless, and allows it to achieve escape velocity. By timing the trajectory correctly ? the satellite and debris field can be sent towards the sun, and will eventually burn up. This system can be used for polar orbits or earth-inclined orbits. Readers are encouraged to watch the videos made by John Hutchison, as the ability to render a object massless, has already been proven. This is done by vibrating the object at the blinking frequency of our universe ? the Lighthouse Frequency. Each reader must comprehend that our universe is literally blinking, off and on, more than 1 trillion times each second.

Sample Book Insights: #1 I was invited to speak at the Southbank Centre in London as a part of the celebration of International Women’s Day. I was excited to be there, and was enjoying the bustle and excitement of the typical festival crowds. #2 I remember the sense of vertigo I felt when one of the young women at the rally, a student from Italy, told me that her country was shutting down. I understood that lockdown, the restriction of citizens’ liberties, only occurred under totalitarian systems.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The most obvious physical constraint on fertility is the length of the fertile period, which has been decreasing from about 17 years in preindustrial societies to less than 13 years in today’s Western world. #2 The shift from high to low fertility took about two centuries in Denmark and 170 years in Sweden. No country has been able to stop the fertility decline at the replacement level and achieve a stationary population. #3 The most common measure of human quality of life is the gross domestic product per capita, but this does not take into account economic inequality or the social net available to disadvantaged families. I prefer to use the Human Development Index, which combines life expectancy at birth and educational achievements with the gross national income per capita. #4 The lowest infant mortality rates are found in small, homogeneous societies with very low birth rates. It is difficult to maintain low infant mortalities in larger, heterogeneous societies with high rates of immigration from less affluent countries.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 You know you’re not expecting if you only feel in the mood about two weeks after your period, hoping that’s when you ovulate. During sex, you start fantasizing about the sperm racing inside you rather than the joystick inside you. #2 It can be difficult to understand how baby-making works and how your own body works (or doesn’t work) to get pregnant. But remember that 10 percent of women in America have difficulty getting or staying pregnant. #3 Trying to get pregnant means having unprotected sex, and making sure you have stopped all birth control, removed all IUDs, and aren’t using any lubes with spermicide. Your period must have returned and is back to its regularly scheduled 28- to 30-day monthly programming. #4 After ejaculation, the sperm enter the woman’s vagina near the cervix. Some of the millions of sperm battle through the cervical mucus to make it into the uterus, where the ovulated egg awaits.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Kerosene is a liquid made of carbon-based molecules that, on the atomic scale, looks like spaghetti. Olive oil is a gloopy liquid made of carbon-based molecules that, on the atomic scale, looks more like twirled spaghetti. #2 The Persian physician and alchemist Rhazes developed special chemical procedures to extract kerosene, a liquid made of carbon-based molecules that looked like twirled spaghetti. It was flammable and produced a smokeless flame. It would take another thousand years for the Persians to discover an alternative source of energy and tax revenue. #3 The structure of liquids is intermediate between the chaos of gas and the static prison of solids. This allows them to flow and maintain a flame, which is a basic principle of liquids. #4 The structure of liquids is intermediate between the chaos of gas and the static prison of solids, and this allows them to flow and maintain a flame.
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The world is not that simple; it is a system, and systems thinkers understand that they can’t solve parts without considering the whole. The linear thinking mindset is also the basis for most of our current solutions that have failed because they do not address the system’s cause but merely its symptoms. For example, we spend billions of dollars trying to reduce teenage pregnancy, but unintended negative consequences are a result because we are treating the symptom but not the cause: abstinence from sex. If you treat only the symptoms, and ignore the causes, you will get only short-term or short-circuiting results. The approach is also the basis for ineffective public policy solutions in general. For example, many approaches to gun violence assume that if we prevent kids from having easy access to guns, then they won’t use them to kill peopleーand therefore, our problem will be solved. Of course, this ignores the fact that if a kid has easy access to a gun, he is more likely to use it to kill someone than if he did not have it at all. Another example is our approach to obesity. #2 Linear thinking, which is the basis for most of our current solutions, does not address the system’s cause but simply its symptoms. Systems thinking, in contrast, is based on the understanding that you can’t solve parts without considering the whole. #3 Systems thinking is the ability to understand the interconnections in a system in such a way as to achieve a desired purpose. It helps people understand the purpose a system is accomplishing, and prompts them to reflect on the difference between what they say they want and what they are actually producing. #4 Systems thinkers understand that you can’t solve parts without considering the whole. Causal feedback loops are the basis for most of our current solutions that have failed because they do not address the system’s cause but simply its symptoms.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 We all have stories about how we became vegan or plant-based. They all start the same: we stopped knowing, and we didn’t realize it until we woke up. We willingly choose to know and change, despite the comfort of ignorance. #2 We turn away from the reality of what we do to animals for our gustatory pleasure, and we play a game of pretend like the child who covers her eyes and thinks you can’t see her. But we remain complicit with the reality through our willful blindness. #3 We see willful blindness reinforced by our desire to conform to tradition, social norms, family expectations, and cultural mores. We see it in the belief that eating animals is neutral or impartial, and that being vegan is taking a position or having an agenda. #4 We have to create boundaries to our compassion and place animals in arbitrary categories in order to continue supporting something that is anathema to our ethics or well-being.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The scapegoating of microbes is a common human tendency. We tend to blame certain microbes for causing serious illnesses, like COVID-19 and hepatitis C, when in reality, it is our own species that is responsible for the state of our oceans. #2 Medical science is rooted in ignorance and the desire for oversimplification. The living world is much more complicated than medical science and the media lets on. #3 While it is true that certain microbes can cause disease, and that they are the primary triggers of it, we must remember that other factors such as environmental toxins, the side effects of medications, and poor nutrition are also linked to disease. #4 The government-sponsored groups that are supposed to protect the health of citizens generally ignore preventive health care, which is a shame, because it has been proven that poor nutrition and a lifestyle that leads to constipation have nothing to do with intestinal bacteria.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 In the mid-1970s, the four-lane Black Horse Pike was the main route between Philadelphia and the Jersey Shore, surrounded by farms and farmers’ markets. There were a few billboards. #2 My mother and her children, Cathy and Stephen, escaped to New Jersey from my father. They lived in a half-house in a clearing in the woods, not fit to live in. Yet, this was their brand-new start. #3 When we moved into our new house, we made a pitiful sight, lugging our sad little bags. Mom was smiling, but in a strange, fixed way that wasn’t even half-happy. We had been living out of a suitcase, four people shoehorned into a single motel room, sleeping on two narrow beds with thin mattresses and springs that dug into our backs at night. #4 We would spend our time in hotels or motels, watching TV and eating junk food.
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The use of the iron lung to treat polio patients was extremely limited, but the images of victims stuck inside the iron lung would forever change the way people thought about disease and medicine. #2 The story of polio is often told as one of the greatest medical achievements of all time, with the Salk and Sabin vaccines being the culmination of decades of research. But what many people don’t know is that polio was completely unknown to most doctors until the late 1800s, and then it became an epidemic disease that mainly affected the rich and well-to-do. #3 Polio is a disease of the dead. To conclusively diagnose someone with polio, you must obtain a cross-section of their spinal column and place it under a microscope. The body is very good at protecting its central nervous system from invaders, but something changed in the late 1800s which turned this once harmless infection into a frequent killer. #4 The National Peace Jubilee in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1869 was the grandest musical event the world had ever seen. Sample Book Insights: #1 The group of scientists who had long seen the advent of a pandemic in the making were infectious disease scientists. They knew that the next pandemic would likely be a virus with a certain kind of genome, written in RNA, and that it would likely be a novel virus that could quickly adapt. #2 Stay home from school work if you’re sick. A Wuhan city hospital has reported a sudden outbreak of pneumonia in young patients… It’s unknown what the pathogen is, but the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission has issued an internal notice warning the public to stay home if they’re sick. That post went viral in China and was picked up by other international news agencies, but Yize Li’s main audience was the otherworldly set of people with whom he spends most of his time these days: the scientists and public health officials who study emerging infectious diseases. The next day he posted a follow-up: I think this is a case of COVID-19, since it’s similar to the 2014 case in China (the source of a lot of the cases in Wuhan today). The 2014 case in China was caused by an index case traveling from China to Wuhan, and then to other cities. -> The group of scientists who had long seen the advent of a pandemic in the making were infectious disease scientists. #3 Scientists have long known that the next pandemic would be a virus with a certain kind of genome, written in RNA, and that it would likely be a novel virus that could quickly adapt. #4 Stay home if you’re sick. -> The group of scientists who had long seen the advent of a pandemic in the making were infectious disease scientists.
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Problems stemming from being abnormally intelligent are largely rooted in math. However, high IQ people rarely consider their intelligence in this manner. They simply do not know how few people with high IQs there are in the world. #2 The Z-Score method gives you a good estimate of where you rank in society in terms of intelligence, but it does not visually convey just how out of the ordinary you are. To do this, you can graph your intelligence on a bell distribution chart since IQ is not linear. The majority of the population falls within one standard deviation of the average score, while the majority of the population falls within two standard deviations of the average score. #3 The world was not built for special people. It was designed for normal people, and because of this, it is not designed for abnormally intelligent people. This means that you will have at least some problems operating in this society. #4 Having a high IQ undermines the most important and fundamental thing in your life ? society. You will derive your value and happiness from other people, and since there are so few abnormally intelligent people out there, it is unlikely that your spouse, boss, co-workers, friends, colleagues, teachers, and neighbors are all going to be geniuses.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The challenges that high-ability children face due to their native intelligence being disregarded or even held as a negative are huge. They are bound to grow sad, act out, or sabotage themselves, and they will most likely develop one mental disorder or another. #2 The language of natural psychology can help us understand how our original personality, formed personality, and available personality are affected by our environment. It can help us think about what has transpired and what is now required of us if we are to reduce our distress. #3 A child who grows up in an environment that disparages thinking will find himself in the jaws of his society’s work machinery. He will be fit for one sort of job and not another, and he will be aimed into one social class and not another. #4 The truth is that thinking is not allowed in most societies. It is seen as elitist and effete, and its progressive views are hated. Tyrants hate intellectuals, for intellectuals as a class see tyranny for what it is and can articulate what they see.
