Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The Jennifer Lawrence incident in 2014 was a reminder that the same thing could have happened to any of us, and that our cloud services may not always be ours to control. #2 The simplest way to protect your online accounts is to simply automate the process. There are several digital password managers out there that store your passwords and allow you to access them with a single click. #3 The first step in protecting your passwords is to have a strong passphrase, not a password. A passphrase should be at least 20 to 25 characters long, and should not be made up of random characters. #4 The passwords you type in are not the same as the hashes that are stored in the protected memory of your computer. The hashes are a sequence of numbers and letters that represent your password. The passwords themselves are stored in the protected memory of your computer, and can be obtained from a compromise of targeted systems or leaked in data breaches.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 If you’ve picked up this book, it’s likely that you are stressed, overwhelmed, and worried about your child’s delays. You might be frustrated with a long wait for an evaluation or intervention services. #2 The system for detecting and treating the earliest signs of autism and other developmental disorders is broken. It is far too long to wait to see the right professionals for evaluations. #3 Developmental disorders are quite common. In fact, 1 in 6 children ages 3 to 17 have a diagnosis of one or more developmental disorders, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, hearing loss, intellectual disability, learning disorders, and speech and language disorders. #4 The situation is much more critical for children of color, as they are typically diagnosed and treated even later than white children.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 My memories are full of the sounds and sights of love: the ache in my elderly grandmother’s voice when she spoke of her husband, gone nearly fifty years, a railway signalman who had courted her for seven years. #2 Love is a mystery that has eluded everyone throughout history. It is a mix of four components: intimacy, passion, commitment, and nature’s reproductive strategy. But for us who are trying to find or keep love, these definitions are useless. #3 The most important building block of any society, the family unit, is now based on feelings of affection and emotional connection. This has been the case since the 1990s, when women began entering the workforce and marrying for love. #4 The nature of love is important to understand, as it is the most intimate relationship we have as adults. It is also the principal relationship for many, and the only one.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The neck muscles come in right and left pairings, so all the neck muscles are involved in lateral flexion and extension. Neck flexion is limited not only by the stiffness of the posterior muscles but also by the stiffness of the posterior ligaments, the strength of the flexor muscles, the alignment of the vertebral bodies with the adjacent vertebrae, and the compressibility of the anterior portions of the intervertebral discs. #2 Stretching the neck can be dangerous if not done properly. Some stretches of the neck use a plow position in which the back of the head lies on a surface, with the trunk nearly perpendicular. This position can generate high stress at the bending point, especially in people with low neck flexibility. #3 The stretch is done while seated or standing, and should not be done while hunching up the shoulders. The neck extensor muscles must remain loose to maintain proper posture, and proper posture can help reduce muscle strain and tightness. #4 After the neck extensors become flexible, you can progress from stretching both sides of the neck simultaneously to stretching the left and right sides individually. Stretching one side at a time allows you to apply a greater stretch on the muscles.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The idea that women should not pursue higher education was first put forward in 1873 by Dr. Edward Clarke, who argued that the female body was not designed for studying. But Mary Jacobi, the first woman to be admitted to France’s ?cole de M?decine, proved him wrong with her medical school studies. #2 The Clarke versus Jacobi dispute was not just academic quibbling, but rather a matter of who was allowed university admission. In the end, Jacobi helped women gain opportunities in higher education, especially in the sciences. #3 Williams was a pioneer in diphtheria antitoxin production, and she was instrumental in slowing down the spread of disease. She was also very solitary, and spent her free time flying stunt planes. #4 Williams’s decision to go into medical science stemmed from a time when she witnessed one bad event spin out of control without the knowledge or training to intervene. She would battle such medical ignorance with her own education.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I had a hangover, and I couldn’t stop shaking my left hand. I was sure it was because of my alcohol consumption the night before, but I didn’t have any symptoms of alcoholic deterioration. #2 I had a theory that the shaking was caused by a drunken slapfight with Woody Harrelson, but I couldn’t remember any such melee. I did, however, remember a moment at the end of the night when my bodyguard had had to prop me up against the door frame while he fumbled the key into the door of my suite. #3 I had no idea that my brain was malfunctioning, and I had no idea that there were problems in the relationship between my brain and my mind. I thought everything was fine, and I was wrong. #4 I am no longer the person described in the first few pages of this chapter. I am forever grateful for that. I would never want to go back to that life, which was a sheltered, narrow existence fueled by fear and self-indulgence.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I was born and raised in a small town called San Pedro Tultepec, outside Toluca, a city in the basin that neighbors Mexico City. Between 2011 and 2013, my town experienced the worst drought in Mexico in seventy years. In 2015, we were hit by heavy rainfall that resulted in flooding. #2 As a descendant of the Otomi-Toltec people, I understand that the Earth takes care of me because my ancestors have always taken care of the Earth. I believe that all communities should embody the morality and wisdom needed to adapt to a post?fossil fuel era. #3 The climate-strike movement is led by youth, but it is also led by youth of all races and ethnicities. The Western media created a narrative that the youth movement started in Europe with Greta Thunberg, but youth of color are also at the forefront of the movement. #4 The climate crisis is a survival issue for everyone, but the ability to respond to climate disasters is not. Wildfires in California, for instance, are not avoiding fancy homes. Snowstorms, hailstorms, and tornadoes are not discriminating either.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Designers have been relegated to the business of making pretty pictures, but now that UX is everywhere, we are thrust into the limelight of product development with our own ideas forming a critical part of the puzzle. #2 I began my career in UX by interviewing for jobs as a marketing manager. I enjoyed interviewing others about their work, and I loved to talk about design. I was confident that I knew a lot about design. #3 I had to figure out how to communicate to my clients what my designs did. I had to answer their questions in a way that made sense to them, not me. I had to express the rationale behind a design using words that would appeal to them and meet their needs. #4 The term user experience designer is a new one that has evolved in meaning over the past decade. It is all design, and no one knows what they are talking about. The point is that we are all constantly adjusting to the changing attitudes and approaches to creating great stuff.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Search engines, and in particular, Google, are constantly changing and evolving. This chapter captures aspects of commercial search from 2009 to 2015, but surely by the time readers engage with it, it will be a historical study rather than a contemporary one. #2 Search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo are a product of the majority culture, and as such they reflect the values and whims of the majority. They rarely question or explore the historical and social conditions that give rise to these results. #3 I had intended to help my stepdaughter and her cousins find fun activities, but I inadvertently exposed them to one of the most graphic and blatant illustrations of what advertisers already thought about them: Black girls were still the fodder of porn sites. #4 The internet is a reflection of the hegemonic frameworks and notions that are often resisted by women and people of color. interrogating what advertising companies serve up as credible information must happen, rather than have a public instantly gratified with stereotypes in three-hundredths of a second.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The integrative approach to cancer has become increasingly popular, and is being used by millions of people around the country. It is important to treat patients like family members, which is why we use the terms patient and person interchangeably. #2 The first case we’re going to look at is that of a 84-year-old woman who was diagnosed with metastatic abdominal cancer. Her oncologist advised her to avoid chemotherapy or surgery, but she was not willing to simply wait to die. She grew her own food, ate healthily, and didn’t smoke or drink alcohol. #3 Rose was treated with high-dose intravenous vitamin C, and after the first week of treatment, she felt an increase in her energy levels. By week three, she could eat without pain and eat more than before. By the fifth week, her digestion problems had gone away. #4 The human papilloma virus, which caused the cancer in this case, can be treated with a series of radiation treatments and chemotherapy. The holistic therapies helped to stabilize Barry’s weight and energy levels, and he was able to avoid having a surgically implanted feeding tube inserted into his abdomen.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The question of how the world will end has been the subject of speculation and debate among poets and philosophers throughout history. The answer, according to science, is fire. The universe will end in about five billion years, when the Sun will swell to its red giant phase and leave the Earth a charred, lifeless, magma-covered rock. #2 Eschatology, the study of the end of everything, is a way for many religions to contextualize the lessons of theology and to drive home their meaning with overwhelming force. It is hard to deny that knowing our cosmic destiny has some impact on how we think about our existence. #3 I have always been drawn to questions that can be answered with scientific observation, mathematics, and physical evidence. I knew I would only be able to accept the truth that could be derived mathematically. #4 The question of the future and ultimate fate of all reality is a scientific one, and the answer is tantalizingly within reach. We are a species that has only just begun to develop the theories and observations needed to understand the far future of the cosmos.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Billy, age 9, had been having problems in school since starting kindergarten. His teachers said he was impulsive and did things without thinking. His parents knew these problems firsthand, and had tried to fix them by sending him to a pediatrician. #2 Melissa, age 5, had been affectionately labeled the pink tornado. She had a severe case of Ring of Fire ADD. Her parents brought her to see me after she was nearly run down in a parking lot after she opened the car door and ran into a store. #3 The symptoms of Inattentive ADD, which is commonly but rarely diagnosed in females, are a short attention span, easily distracted, and little substance. After starting treatment, Louanne dramatically improved. #4 When Gregg first came to see me at the age of 14, he was a wreck. He had just been expelled from his third school for fighting and breaking the rules. He never did his homework, and he talked about dropping out of school. But when I did a test of verbal intelligence on him, his demeanor changed.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The life of Michael Faraday might have begun and passed quietly in the remote seclusion of rural Westmorland, but for the pressure of wider events. In the mid to late 1700s, Britain had been fighting rival colonial powers at sea for many years, and it finally lost an expensive war against its own colonists in America. #2 Faraday was a book lover, and he was always reading. He learned from books, and he learned from his mistakes. He developed a method of self-improvement that involved reading, and he always tried to use precise language. #3 Faraday was a very curious young man, and he loved to read. He would copy out his notes from the lectures he went to, and he would often experiment with static electricity. He was already beginning to think about how electricity worked, and he questioned the truth of an ostensibly authoritative article in the Encyclopaedia Britannica. #4 In 1800, John Tatum learned of the voltaic cell, or battery, invented by Alessandro Volta. It produced a continuous flow of electricity that could be used to demonstrate the structure of matter.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Truffles are the underground fruiting bodies of several types of mycorrhizal fungi. They are spore-producing organs that evolved to allow fungi to disperse themselves, but underground their spores can’t be caught by air currents. Their solution is to smell. #2 The human sense of smell is extraordinary. We can detect virtually all volatile chemicals, and we outperform rodents and dogs in detecting certain odors. Smells are woven into our memories. #3 Truffles have long been associated with sex, and they are not the only fungi that attract animal attention. Orchid bees, for example, collect scents from the world and amass them into a cocktail to court females. #4 Humans wear perfumes produced by other organisms, and it is not uncommon for fungal aromas to be incorporated into our own sexual rituals.
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Humans are classified as a genus, or group, of animal species called Homo. We are also classified as sapiens, which means wise. We are the only existing human form. #2 The hominid family includes humans, bonobos, chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans. We have discovered many fossils of prehuman ancestors, such as Ardipithecus, Paranthropus, and Australopithecus, which are more closely related to us than they are to chimpanzees. #3 The hominin family tree actually looks more like a bush, which shows that hominins passed through a series of significant evolutionary stages, periods during which several related species possessed nearly the same body type and lifestyles. #4 The first stage in the evolution of human bipedalism was the transition from arboreal quadruped to imperfect bipedalism, meaning that these hominins were capable of walking on two legs but still remained arboreal.

I also learned that reclaimed water is all around me in Florida, and that lawns use it. #3 The water issue is actually very simple. While living organisms like bacteria and parasites are successfully filtered out or killed by high chemical levels, the smallest molecules, especially the hormones, are not removed from drinking water. #4 Part 1: Indecent Exposures begins with a simple definition of the term estrogenic, and then lists the top 10 estrogenic substances found in our environment.
This short technical paper describes the basic theory and design for floating cities in the clouds, which have been described in numerous science fiction books and movies. Any structure or object can be made to behave as though it were essentially massless. This is done by synchronizing an electrical signal on the surface of the object with the blinking frequency of our universe (Lighthouse Frequency) which is 1.1 THz. Imagine a sine wave split by the x-axis with the top half representing matter and the bottom half representing antimatter. The x-axis being sequential time, in our terms. Each time the sine wave crosses the x- axis, gravity and electromagnetism forces collapse to zero (representing the single point of the Electrical Universe). When we synchronize an electrical signal with the sine wave, just before crossing the x-axis, all objects and structures will behave as though they are massless. Note that this feature explains the Hutchison Effect, which is basically operating at a harmonic of the Lighthouse Frequency. The Hutchison Effect has demonstrated "levitation" many times. Each reader must comprehend that our physical universe literally blinks off and on, more than one trillion times every second.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The first time I tried to answer the question What does it mean to become a mother. it involved pumping two or so ounces of breast milk that would become just one of the two bottles I needed to feed my infant at day care the following day. I sat in that closet and pumped and pumped, and when the milk didn’t come, I sat in that closet and pumped some more, until I was so frustrated that my back hurt and my breasts felt like they were going to explode. And still the milk wouldn’t come. I was desperate. I wanted to know what it means to become a mother, but I couldn’t get an answer. Still unable to produce enough milk for my baby, I went back to work. I needed more information, but more information was not coming. I was four months postpartumーthe time of most intense lactationーand this still wasn’t enough milk. How long would this take. -> What does it mean to become a mother. For many women, the answer is scary because it means examining how they are different from nonmothers, and from a male perspective, how much less interesting they are. #2 This is not a parenting book. I have two kids, and I have written a book describing my experience as a new parent. I am not a parenting expert. #3 This book will not give you advice on how to raise your child or how to be a parent. It will instead explore the biological changes and lived experience that makes parenthood so profound. #4 The idea that we are the dedicated mother bird, guided by a maternal instinct that has been perfected through the ages, is bullshit. We are not naturally caring for our children. We are not born with the ability to do so.
