Pr?sentation :

Human hunger for God is intense and universal. Even if suppressed or denied, it cries out silently from the depths.

Such hunger is not a wish to know about God, but rather a quest to encounter Him. People want to touch, experience, and feel the divine - not just discover facets about God. - Dr. Jon L. Dybdahl

Humans have tried since the beginning of their creation to fill the hunger, or empty space, inside of themselves with all that they can find on their own. The desire for money, homes, cars and various material possessions continues to fill our credit cards without filling our longing for "something." Dr. Jon Dybdahl brings his passion for teaching into this second edition of his successful book, Hunger: Satisfying the Longing of your Soul.

Whether you are a seminary professor, a small group leader with 3-12 students or someone who seeks to move closer in your relationship to God, your Savior and Creator, you will find entrees which are biblically grounded to study and that are savory and healthy for your spiritual body.

The basic thrust of this study is to demonstrate the utility and limitations of land-based aircraft when used to attain political objectives in crises occurring in the third world. Crises, when used in the context of this study, are viewed primarily as a series of interactions between or within states for which there exists the perception of a high probability of war. Admittedly, determination of perception is a subjective process, one that does not lend itself to qualification; but when fear, apprehension, and tension reach a level that prompts some form of conflict behavior, then a perception of a high probability of war can be said to exist.

Beyond any doubt, our case study of the 1973 Yom Kippur War will clearly indicate the existence of a major crisisand one that escalated to dangerous levels. By contrast, our case studies of the Mayaguez in 1975, the Congo and the Bay of Pigs in the early sixties, and Zaire in the mid-seventies, indicate a lower level of intensity. Consequently, we examine these conflicts on a typological basis ranging from a simple to a complex crisis; and, since the essence of a crisis is its uncertainty and unpredictability, these latter case studies remain suitable for our analysis.

Collectively, these interactions appear to provide ample evidence of the utility of land-based aircraft to signal intentions, demonstrate support, modify behavior, and terminate conflict. By the same token, however, these interactions suggest some limitations of land-based aircraft when employed in remote areas distant from main operating bases. Our case studies span the globe to examine third world crises occurring as far away as Southeast Asia and as close to home as the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. Thus, this discussion presents a geographical sample as well as a typological study of third world crises.

Three of the formative revolutions that shook the early twentieth-century world occurred almost simultaneously in regions bordering each other. Though the Russian, Iranian, and Young Turk Revolutions all exploded between 1904 and 1911, they have never been studied through their linkages until now. Roving Revolutionaries probes the interconnected aspects of these three revolutions through the involvement of the Armenian revolutionariesーminorities in all of these empiresーwhose movements and participation within and across frontiers tell us a great deal about the global transformations that were taking shape. Exploring the geographical and ideological boundary crossings that occurred, Houri Berberian’s archivally grounded analysis of the circulation of revolutionaries, ideas, and print tells the story of peoples and ideologies in upheaval and collaborating with each other, and in so doing it illuminates our understanding of revolutions and movements.

Professionally converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction, this study reviews the performance of the 65th Infantry throughout the Korean war, providing insights not only into the regiment's unique problems but also into the status of the U.S. Army's combat forces during one of the most trying periods in its history.

Originally formed at the turn of the nineteenth century to protect America's strategic interests in the Caribbean, the 65th Infantry was composed of locally recruited Puerto Rican soldiers led primarily by non-Hispanic "continental" officers. Although in existence for almost fifty years, the 65th had not experienced intense combat until it was committed to the Korean peninsula in the initial months of the war. There, despite its lack of previous wartime service, the regiment did extremely well from September 1950 to August 1951, establishing a solid reputation as a dependable infantry unit and a mainstay of the heavily embattled 3d Infantry Division. After that period, however, its performance began to suffer as experienced cadre rotated out of the regiment and were replaced by new leaders and soldiers who lacked the skills and special cohesive bonds displayed by their predecessors. The net result was a highly publicized series of incidents and disciplinary actions that have never been adequately explained or understood.

Its findings underscore the critical impact of personnel-rotation policies, ethnic and organizational prejudices, and the work of small-unit leaders on combat readiness and battlefield success. They also illustrate the critical role of senior leaders in analyzing problems in these areas in a timely fashion and instituting effective reforms. For the 65th, a catastrophic shortage of trained NCOs, unaddressed language problems, and inept command leadership temporarily undermined its combat effectiveness. Making matters worse, senior commanders reacted in a heavy-handed manner with little analysis of what was really going on.

The regiment's colors remained in Korea until November 1954, when the unit returned to Puerto Rico. Today, the 1st Battalion of the 65th Infantry remains as part of the Puerto Rican National Guard, a testimony to a unique combat unit that served the United States Army well for over one hundred years.

Chapter 1 - Prologue: Before Korea.
Long before the particular civil rights movement in the United
States of America of the time of 1950s & 1960s had started
making proper headlines, the response of the black community
towards oppression as well as racial inequality was highly under
its way. Definitely, as the failed emancipation's promise in the
latter half of the 19
th century had given rise to the case of
Jim Crow which was viewed as a series of customs and laws
that were responsible for segregation and disfranchising of the
black community ? it was also responsible for compelling a
group of individuals towards launching the efforts for asserting
their respective constitutional rights and for improving their
given standing in the community. Towards the turning of the
century, for instance, the outspoken leader Ida B. Wells had
grappled with the most major leading issues of the time: the
lynching of the people belonging to the black community.
Through a series of highly analyzed orchestrated attack on the
journalist, Wells had almost brought the given form of violence
that tended to be racial singlehandedly ?this represented as the
major trenchant symbolism of the supremacy of the whites ?to
the headlines of the consciousness of the nation. However, the
others were still mobilizing the overall creation of the leading
organizations that would be shaping and supporting the fights
& movements for the given civil rights. Under this scenario,
Marcus Garvey was responsible for forming the Universal
Negro Improvement Association during the time of 1917 for the
aim of promoting his contention with respect to the fact that
the black community should be working towards
self-determination: the idea that was responsible for prefiguring
the overall power movement of the black community during the
time of the 1960s. Similarly, during the time of the 1905, the
man named W.E.B Du Bois and several other leaders had
resulted into the formation of the famous Niagara Movement
for addressing the black grievances. This had led to the
immensely influential and reputed NAACP (National Association
for the Advancement of the Colored People) along with the
legal assaulting of the given discrimination.
As the early times of the black community and activists were
seeking a similar present ?a highly equitable society ?the
respective goals & means were not completely unified, under
some cases, their respective efforts towards eliminating the given
racial barriers had been in direct opposition to the other. For
instance, Booker T. Washington had promoted vocational
training along with economic independence as the means of
proper tactical response, in portions, towards the southern
economy in the field of agriculture. However, the pragmatic
approach adopted by Washington was under fire soon as
claimed to some predominantly white group during the time of
1895 that under all the things that were purely social, the
individuals could be separate as our fingers, however, they were
all one just like the hand for the things that involved mutual
progress. The critics of Washington, most importantly W.E.B.
Du Bois, had denounced the given promotion of segregation as
well as the willingness of foregoing the political power of the
black community. In comparison to Washington, W.E.B. Du Bois
who was a Harvard-educated person of intellect had advocated
the complete transformation of the cultural as well as the
political life of the black community.

Empiricist philosophy of science of the kind that promised truth through method and a unification of science now lies in disarray. Arguments over the indeterminancy of theoretical language, the inadequacy of induction, the empirical incommensurability of competing theories, the possibility or im possibility of scientific progress, and the applicability of natural science metatheory and methods to problems of human action have allIed to a loss in confidence. As it is commonly said, the philosophy of science is now in a "postempiricist" phase. It is a phase marked by heated disagreement over the possibility of empirically grounded scientific knowledge. Because the orienting assumptions of traditional psychology had been largely derived from the early logical empiricist program for science, the general deteriora tion in confidence at the philosophic level was inevitably to have repercus sions within psychology. The extensive ferment that has occurred within so cial psychology over the past decade, often termed "the crisis in social psychology," must properly be viewed within this context. And, in cases where criticisms of the traditional craft have been initiated on other than philosophical grounds, traditional logical empiricist answers have no longer been found sustaining. In effect, the science of psychology no longer rests on a firm metatheoretical base, and the future remains very much in the bal ance. Within this critical period of search and reappraisal, there are few voices that equal in significance that of Edward Sampson.

More than ever, international security and economic prosperity depend upon safe access to the shared domains that make up the global commons: maritime, air, space, and cyberspace. Together these domains serve as essential conduits through which international commerce, communication, and governance prosper. However, the global commons are congested, contested, and competitive. In the January 2012 defense strategic guidance, the United States confirmed its commitment “to continue to lead global efforts with capable allies and partners to assure access to and use of the global commons, both by strengthening international norms of responsible behavior and by maintaining relevant and interoperable military capabilities.”

In the face of persistent threats, some hybrid in nature, and their consequences, Conflict and Cooperation in the Global Commons provides a forum where contributors identify ways to strengthen and maintain responsible use of the global commons. The result is a comprehensive approach that will enhance, align, and unify commercial industry, civil agency, and military perspectives and actions.

It seems an irrefutable truth that raising animals for meat has become unsustainable. Land is being eroded and destroyed, water resources overdrawn, greenhouse gases overemitted, and energy and crops unnecessarily diverted - all to satiate a growing and inequitable global overconsumption of meat. But is all meat unsustainable? Sustainable food systems are multiple and varied and represent the diversity and complexity we see in the world. A range of socio-ecological and political-economic challenges and solutions are involved in the question of whether sustainable meat consumption exists. Green Meat? teases out some of that complexity in order to consider what roles animals and their products might play in the future as the world works towards new ways of living. Through an interdisciplinary lens, scholars and practitioners critically examine the multifaceted dimensions of "green meat": contributors confront the industrial production and slaughter of animals, ask what it means to be a carnivore, and consider the possibilities of regenerative animal agriculture and cellular agriculture. The book analyzes ongoing damage to the landscape, the climate, and water systems caused by conventional livestock production and looks at current debates about the place of meat in sustainable agri-food systems. An expansive inquiry into food production practices, Green Meat? will inspire the kind of discussion and debate necessary to grapple with the complex issue of sustainability.

Why are a United States of Europe, in theory and abstract the most rational option, practically impossible today? This book analyses the contradiction implied in having enormous world-level potential whilst lacking the force to execute this due to the current structural limitations of the European Union. It examines the principal historical background to the idea of a federal Europe and its successive achievements after the European Community was constituted. It also aims to show how a union has been shaped where supranational and intergovernmental impulses coexist in a contradictory way. The Great Recession of 2008 and the refugee crisis of 2015 have also posed ever more profound challenges to European integration. Eurosceptic and Europhobic forces that encourage nationalist withdrawal and opt for recipes of authoritarian populism are taking advantage of the errors and hesitancy of the community "establishment". After describing and interpreting the context and results of the crucial elections to the European Parliament in 2019, the programmes of the main parties in the six most populated states of the union are analysed. This takes the form of a questionnaire regarding the greater or lesser degree of integration advocated by each state, providing a highly representative picture of the great plurality of existing options. Lastly, it includes a chapter on the constitution of the Von der Leyen Commission, the finalisation of Brexit and the serious crisis the European Union has faced due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Silk Stocking Bandits: City of Violence

by Thomas J. Lentini

For decades, the story of Youngstown, Ohio, was a story of violence. Organized crime, murder and political corruption were forces in the lives of residents, and shaped the city’s reputation to the larger world: Youngstown became Murdertown, USA. In vivid bursts of fiction and memoir, The Silk Stocking Bandits tracks the rise and fall of the mafia underworld as it weaves through the Mahoning Valley community and brushes up against the life of the author, Thomas J. Lentini, bringing the reader along from gambling heists to botched contract killings to Havana vacations, and from thrilling suspense to tragedy.

About the Author

Thomas J. Lentini is from the Mahoning Valley, one of seven children raised by Italian immigrants. He has written several stories about growing up and living on a farm during The Great Depression. In 1938 his father died and the family farm was lost - he embarked on a long full life, spent in the Air Force, serving in Korea and as a General Motors supervisor, among family and friends and the occasional mobster acquaintance. He has traveled throughout Australia and Italy in search of his parents' relatives. He is a graduate of LongRidge Writers Group in West Redding, Connecticut.

A major phenomenon in the post-World War II world is the rise of Japan as a leading international economic and industrial power. This advance began with American aid in rebuilding the nation after the war, but it has now seen Japan rival and even outstrip the United States on several fronts. The relations between the two powers and the impact that they have on economic and political factors during the postwar years are the focus of this important book. The editors, Akira Iriye and Warren I. Cohen, themselves noted authorities on Asian affairs, have gathered here contributions from a distinguished group of American and Japanese scholars. The resulting collection represents a unique blend of viewpoints from each side of the American-Japanese relationship.

This is a comprehensive and unique history of the Minuteman ICBM program and related Cold War issues, focusing on missile silos in South Dakota. The history of the Cold War, focusing on the 1950s and 1960s, describes how nuclear systems developed, and the political climate and foreign policy decisions of Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy - and how these factors affected development of strategic missiles and nuclear armament systems. Chapter 2 provides a background on ICBM program beginnings and liquid-fuel ICBMs, placing the development of solid-fuel ICBMs into context. Chapter 3 discusses development and capabilities of both the Minuteman I and Minuteman II missile systems and provides an overview of the development of Minuteman III and the future generation of missile development. Section II -Life on the South Dakota Plains: Before, During, and After Minuteman presents the history of the Minuteman missile in South Dakota. Chapter 1 provides a brief overview of the prehistory and history of the region discussing Native American history, land speculation and settlement, and continued agricultural uses. This background describes the landscape and environment prior to the establishment of 150 Minuteman I and II LFs and fifteen LCFs throughout the state. Chapters 2 to 5 deals with the development, construction, and activities of the missile sites in South Dakota from the 1960s through the 1980s when the sites were still active, with an emphasis on LCF Delta-01 and LF Delta-09. A history of the Air Force highlighting the Strategic Air Command and Ellsworth Air Force Base in Chapter 2 provides the background for a discussion of the 44th Strategic Missile Wing, which commanded the Minuteman sites in South Dakota. Chapter 3 provides the history of the location, land purchase, and construction of the Minuteman sites in South Dakota. Section II continues with a discussion of the day-to-day activities of the personnel assigned to the missile sites, including the training, roles, and responsibilities of the missile combat crew, facility manager, security and maintenance personnel, and the cook. Section II concludes by addressing changes in the roles, responsibilities, and personnel at the sites during the Minuteman's tenure, including the introduction of female missileers and addressing racial issues among personnel at the sites and within the greater community.
From Prince to Prophet is the third book in The Crown Series, and it's about the life of Moses. Most of us know him as the one to whom God gave the Ten Commandments. But God also gave him responsibilities, authorities, and privileges that few men have ever been given.

Moses was raised as royalty, educated to the highest standards, honored as a heroic soldier and elected to be heir to Pharaoh's throne. But God took Moses away from it all and put him in the wilderness where He prepared him for the greatest task of leadership this world has ever known. History is amazing because it teaches us what happened in the past that got us to where we are today. And Moses played a major role in the history of the Jewish nation, and every person who loves the Lord knows that Moses was part of God's divine plan for salvation!

We learned in the previous book, From Slave to Hero, how God worked with Joseph to bring his family through the famine and give them a new temporary home in Goshen, which is in Egypt. This was the beginning of the Jewish nationーand they grew in number to become a large nation. But things changed over the years! When Joseph and the Pharaoh both died, the new Pharaohs that followed went back to hating the children of Jacob, who is also called Israel. So they were enslaved for almost 400 years, at which time they were in danger of being killed off so that there would be no more Israel.

But God's timing is perfect! Moses was born and chosen by God to save the Israelite people. His job was hard, but he loved God and was obedient to Him. We can see the relationship that Moses shared with God and the power that God demonstrated to the people through him.

This book touches on the highlights of the life of Moses, yet there is so much more in the Bibleーdetails that will help you to see how God worked through this man to save the children He loved. I hope that this book will inspire you to dig into the Bible and learn everything about Moses. This will help you to better understand the history of the Jewish nation and the love that God has for them and for all those who love Him and are part of His family.

As all the books in this series, this book is for readers of all ages who want to know God and understand His love for us. Each book focuses on a specific character, and each has an underlying message for the reader. The theme of this book is humility. Like the other books in The Crown Series, this one is being read by Grandpa to his grandson who is filled with the questions we all want to ask.

Many journalists and news commentators deny the existence, length, and intensity of the wave of intolerance that began immediately after 9/11 and continued for years afterward. This book is an attempt to document that this backlash did occur, and was much worse and much longer in duration than many Americans realize. In the years following 9/11, many ethnic Americans and immigrant residents were affected by a surge of hate crimes triggered by the terrorist strikes and the concomitant 'War on Terror.' This book argues that the 9/11 backlash was fueled by 20th-century Islamophobia and Hinduphobia, coupled with local and federal authorities' long-standing unwillingness to acknowledge the reality of hate crimes or handle them with the gravity they deserved. These factors created a "perfect storm" of xenophobia that swept through the U.S. after the terrorist attacks and continued to affect diverse minority communities for more than a decade. Chapter one establishes the need for this book, discussing how reporters and pundits often dismissed or trivialized the bias component of attacks taking place in the aftermath of 9/11. This introductory chapter also explores the incredible ethnic and religious diversity of both bias crime victims and perpetrators. Chapter two provides an overview of pre-9/11 bias attacks, arguing that poor local and federal response to 'Dot-buster' assaults, mosque arsons, and other 20th-century hate crimes created an environment in which post-9/11 xenophobia flourished. Subsequent chapters explore different dimensions of the decade-long backlash, demonstrating how news commentators routinely minimized the severity of post-9/11 hate crimes and local and federal investigators denied that hate crimes were taking place in their jurisdictions. Chapter three acknowledges the South Asian, Christian Arab, and Muslim victims of the terrorist strikes in order to challenge nativist interpretations of 9/11. Chapter four discusses physical assaults that began on September 11, 2001 and continued for years afterwards. Chapter five examines post-9/11 vandalism attacks and arsons at mosques, Sikh prayer centers, and Hindu temples. Synagogues and immigrant-friendly churches were also targeted. Chapter six investigates backlash incidents on academic campuses. Chapter seven explores 9/11 hate crimes targeting minority employees in their workplaces, establishing that taxi drivers, 7-Eleven convenience-store clerks, and gas station attendants were particularly vulnerable. Chapter eight delves into bias-motivated attacks on minority residences in the aftermath of the terrorist strikes. Chapter nine examines death threats and verbal attacks after 9/11. Chapter ten discusses killings linked to the backlash. Each of these middle chapters begins in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 and covers hate crimes in the decade that followed. These chapters also include a discussion of Islamophobic and Hinduphobic television programs and films that coincided with the timing of bias attacks. Chapter eleven investigates 75 reasons why backlash hate crimes are undercounted in the U.S., focusing on the unwillingness of minority victims to report attacks to minimally-sympathetic local and federal authorities. Chapter twelve offers 75 solutions to problems raised by the backlash. This section questions the efficacy of specific 'War on Terror' federal policies and proposes strategies to end post-9/11 discrimination, such as the widespread racial profiling of airport travelers. This book ends with a discussion of the August 5, 2012 Wisconsin Sikh Temple Massacre.

Churches vary a great deal - but can we see past all their differences to what underlies them?

'Generous orthodoxy' is a phrase that describes a Christianity both broad and deep, rooted in the historic creeds and embracing different expressions of Christian faith. The Bond of Peace is a ground-breaking, creative and practical exploration of what generous orthodoxy really means, and how expressing it might bring about a sense of unity in the church that is badly needed in our fractured and polarised world.

Drawing together leading theologians from the UK and the USA - including David Ford, Katherine Sonderegger, Willie Jennings, Tom Greggs, JKA Smith and Jane Williams - The Bond of Peace offers reflections on how generous orthodoxy can be expressed through everything from worship and preaching to biblical theology, the arts and more.

Based around a series of lectures held at St Mellitus College, and sponsored by the McDonald Agape Foundation, this timely book is essential reading for anyone interested in how the Christian Church can bridge the gap between denominations to negotiate the challenges of our 21st century world in a united manner. It will leave you, not only with a deeper understanding of generous orthodoxy, but the practical confidence to celebrate and embrace the differences in Christian denominations so we can all live together more joyfully - through the transforming and renewing work of the Holy Spirit.

An investigation into the possibility of impossible languages, searching for the indelible “fingerprint” of human language.

Can there be such a thing as an impossible human language? A biologist could describe an impossible animal as one that goes against the physical laws of nature (entropy, for example, or gravity). Are there any such laws that constrain languages? In this book, Andrea Moroーa distinguished linguist and neuroscientistーinvestigates the possibility of impossible languages, searching, as he does so, for the indelible “fingerprint” of human language.

Moro shows how the very notion of impossible languages has helped shape research on the ultimate aim of linguistics: to define the class of possible human languages. He takes us beyond the boundaries of Babel, to the set of properties that, despite appearances, all languages share, and explores the sources of that order, drawing on scientific experiments he himself helped design. Moro compares syntax to the reverse side of a tapestry revealing a hidden and apparently intricate structure. He describes the brain as a sieve, considers the reality of (linguistic) trees, and listens for the sound of thought by recording electrical activity in the brain. Words and sentences, he tells us, are like symphonies and constellations: they have no content of their own; they exist because we listen to them and look at them. We are part of the data.
